Avoiding a DWI this Holiday Season

Avoiding a DWI this Holiday Season

It's now December, which means that everywhere around the country—including in greater Buffalo—law enforcement agencies are preparing for more drunk drivers on the road. It's well known that the coming weeks will be filled with holiday parties, family gatherings, and other festivities and that most of these activities are likely to involve alcohol. DWI arrests spike around this time every year and countless holiday seasons are dashed by needless criminal charges, road accidents, fines, and even jail time.

That is why it is so important to be vigilant of drunk driving this time of year. There are a few precautionary steps that most of us can make that can help ensure that we continue to enjoy the holiday season free of any DWI charges or accidents.

A few holiday DWI tips to keep in mind:

• Remember your ride-sharing options. Ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber have already been credited in a decrease of drunk driving arrests in some areas. When traveling to that next holiday get-together, remember that these services are available and are often a cheap option for short trips around the city.
  • Use a designated driver. Still one of the safest ways to ensure your safety on the road is designating one driver in your party who will not drink and will later drive you home. Carpooling also helps reduce the number of cars on the road and alleviates potentially dangerous holiday traffic.
  • Make it an overnight stay. If you know that you will be drinking while at a friend or a family member's residence, you may want to consider staying the night instead getting back on the road. Alternatively, if you are hosting a gathering, make the couches or spare beds available to drivers who may have imbibed too much to get back behind the wheel that same evening.
  • Call a taxi. While often seen as an expensive option, calling a taxi service is still a reliable way to get home without getting behind the wheel after drinking. Even if you have to retrieve your vehicle where you left it the next morning, your cab fare will be minimal compared on the fines, fees, and headaches that can result from a DWI arrest.
