In November of 2009, the New York State Legislature made some key changes to the Vehicle and Traffic Laws by signing Leandra’s Law into effect. This new law, named in honor of Leandra Rosado who was killed while riding in the intoxicated vehicle of her friend’s mother.
The new laws state that anybody who is convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) must install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle for at least 12 months. These devices require that the driver blow into a breathalyzer that electronically unlocks the car’s ignition. If you are required to install one of these in your vehicle, you will be required to pay all fees associated with the process.
When you are arrested for a DWI, it is important to obtain legal representation as soon as possible. You will not have much time between your arrest and arraignment in court, making critical that you immediately retain an experienced and knowledgeable trial attorney.
